Desirea Weninger – Coaching Profile

About Me

When I was 3 my mom took me to the rink, I saw the figure skaters twirling around and told my mom, “I want to do that!” The following winter she enrolled me in figure skating, and I have been on skates ever since. I quickly fell in love with the sport and dedicated every winter to it. I am from a very small town in Southern Saskatchewan, our coaches often travelled a great distance to coach us. However, blizzards and terrible weather often kept them away. It is because of this that I decided to coach. I began coaching CanSkate in grade 11 and in Grade 12 took over coaching the entire club. I have been coaching since.

I have a deep love for sport and physical fitness. I believe everyone should lead an active life. I followed this love to the completion of a bachelors degree in Kinesiology from the University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge, AB.

Coaching Philosophy

With each skater comes a new set of challenges for a coach. Every person learns differently, I try to make it my goal to figure out how each skater learns and tailor my lessons to their needs. I believe in hard work, and efficient work. Skating has taught me that with every tiny slip or fall there is a lesson, and something to learn. I try to show my skaters that there are many steps towards reaching a final goal, and each is just as important as the next. Further, I believe in teaching skaters how to find ways to help themselves, to help ensure that practice time is quality practice.   Finally, the most important point: I want my skaters to enjoy figure skating. This means sometimes I look like a fool jumping up and down cheering them on but it usually brings a smile to the skaters face so it’s worth it.
